Fight Club

2012 was a year of change in fashion. Some of the key industry players participated in a game of musical chairs, moving from one house to another. Stefano Pilati departed from (Yves) Saint-Laurent Paris, whilst Balenciaga’s Nicholas Ghesquiere shocked everyone with the sudden departure announcement after a 15-year reign – fuelling speculations about Christopher Kane perhaps taking over the brand. Yet, Kane was only just getting divorced from Versus. What was more interesting was the appointment of New York designer, Alexander Wang taking over Balenciaga. PPR (who own Balenciaga) explained that Wang is what they needed to make the brand more commercially appealing. Wang’s collections are redolent of a cool-college-chic(k) and far from the couture appeal that Ghesquiere’s had, so it’s no surprise that his debut at Paris Fashion Week this season is one of the most anticipated shows.

For his A/W13 collection, Wang’s models put on their fluffy boxing-mittens, power walking to Eye Of The Tiger, fierce faces on, and ready for the challenge – whether that of the weather or they were metaphoric figures advocating Wang’s confidence about his new role as creative director of Balenciaga. He played with leather and auburn pony skin as well as his signature stormy palette of mohair in Persian-cat grey, black and sky blue.

The Wang-girl seemed more mature in her tastes: less sporty and preppy as we’re used to seeing; she is tougher and was spotted in a laser cut dress, a top with slit shoulders and oversized gentlemanly pieces. She exuded a lot of confidence this time around in narrow androgynous silhouettes and cocooned by round-shouldered jackets. The mature spirited show complimented his growth in the industry and flaunted his craftsmanship in layering, folding and knotting fabrics, showing us all he is ready to take up the challenges to come.
